In other news, we recently had our PA Blogger Meet Up. We got together at a great little riverside restaurant, with a great view and great weather. It was great to meet some of the other local bloggers out there, and we all agreed that we need to make it an annual event. Everyone left with goodies and smiles on their faces.

Besides Killer B and I there were bloggers from:

Definitely made me miss teaching first grade.  :(

Be on the lookout for a surprise from us PA Bloggers later this month!

  1. Hi Nick,
I just found your blog through the Pinterest Scavenger Hunt and I am your newest follower! I am also a TPT seller and new blogger.

Your pin about the book Wonder caught my eye. I'm currently reading the book myself and plan to use it somehow with my 4th graders this year. Your unit for the book looks amazing! I'm curious about how you used it in your 3/4 class. Was it a whole class novel with everyone having their own copy, a read-aloud, or did you use it with a small group? I'm always trying to balance a workshop approach with lots of book choice, and my district's desire for structured guided reading groups.

Thanks, and I look forward to reading more of your posts and checking out your products!

    1. Hi!

I actually taught this book last year with my 5th graders. I'll be new to a 3rd/4th multiage this year! BUT, I would definitely use this book with 4th graders.

I mostly used the book as our class read aloud, and also as a mentor text for reading mini-lessons about many of the different CAFE strategies. I did use the book in my small reading groups on several occasions to discuss various reading strategies. Because many of the chapters are quite short, I was able to copy several of them to use for "close reading" with my groups. Often these were chapters we'd already read as a class. The kids don't mind because this book is awesome. I had kids literally cheering at some points and openly crying at others.

The unit comes with a packet of activities that would work really well as either independent center activities, or could be used at your guided reading groups. I hope you'll give this book and the unit a try. I think your class will love it.

      -Nick

  2. Thanks so much for your prompt reply! I love the idea of revisiting certain chapters for close reading! I need to finish the book and then figure out how to use it with my students. I will likely give your unit a try, even if I don't use all parts of it...it looks like there is so much there! I probably would use this later in the year.

    Thanks again for your help!
